Genghis Khan went down in history as the most fearsome and most powerful war lord that the Earth had ever seen. His name is synonymous of bloody conquests, of absolute power, but very few people know the life story of the man behind the legend. At age nine, the boy, known only by the name Temüjin, goes on a journey with his father, the chief of their tribe, during which he meets Börte, a mischievous young girl whom he chooses to be his future wife. On their way home, his father is murdered and his tribe attacked by Targutai, a jealous warrior who has sworn to kill Temüjin to take his place. Running away was the only way to be saved. A life of ordeals and adventures starts for him with one goal – to find the girl who will help him become the great Genghis Khan.
“I’ve always liked taking famous characters, delving into their life stories to show, beyond the clichés, what really happened during their lives. I wanted to know who Genghis Khan really was. Was he actually the monster that our collective imagination has retained?” Serguei Bodrov
