Born in Bangladesh, young Nazneen, promised to an older man, leaves her family and her country to join her future husband in London. Cut off in a country where she does not speak the language, she devotes herself to her family in the Brick Lane housing estate, where banal racism, rampant fundamentalism and all kinds of trafficking are rife.
Little by little, however, she finds solidarity and friendship.
Torn between ancestral traditions and unreasonable hope, Nazneen will little by little take control of her life, to the point of crossing the ultimate forbidden line.... And realise that granting oneself the right to happiness has a price.
“Our aim was to focus on this woman’s path towards her own identity. We followed what was, in the end, quite a simple storyline: the story begins in spring bathed in the sparkling hues of Bangladesh and ends in the cold, wintery whiteness of London... In life, there are two kinds of love: that passion capable of changing a whole life and that other more subtle relationship consolidated a little more with each passing day.” Abi Morgan, scriptwriter
