It’s the start of the summer. In a remote village in Turkey, Lale and her four sisters play with the boys on the way home from school and provoke a scandal with unexpected consequences.
The family home is gradually transformed into a prison, lessons on good housekeeping replace school and marriages start being arranged. The five sisters, inspired by the same desire for freedom, go over the limits imposed on them.
“The larger part of my family still live in Turkey and I’ve spent my life going to and fro between the two countries. I am so much more concerned by these events that are taking place in Turkey as it’s an area in the midst of turmoil, where everything is on the move. For some time, the country has been taking a more conservative approach, but you can still feel the momentum and exuberance there. You get the impression that you are at the heart of something, that everything can spiral at any time, spin off in any direction. It also harbours incredible wealth for fiction to draw on.” Deniz Gamze Ergüven
