An American family of South Korean origin settles in Arkansas where the father wants to become a farmer. His little boy has to get used to this new life and to the presence of his Korean grandmother, whom he did not know. “The character of the child, David, I imagined by using memories I had of my fears, my moments of excitement and curiosity as a child as well as the way my daughter experiences important moments of her childhood. David has become a mixture of what I would have liked to say to myself as a boy and what I wanted to say to my daughter... I wanted to avoid making my characters into the representatives of social and political archetypes. Minari is the story of an Ameri-Korean family but I hope it will move spectators wherever they come from and whatever their childhood was like. My father settled in the United States dreaming romantically of a land able to fulfill all its promises. But I have often been able to witness how much harder reality really is.” Lee Isaac Chung
