A young woman who works in a clothing factory in Singapore meets the young factory boss. They fall in love, and experience the ups and downs of a difficult relationship, in a context of social and political change. The first Chinese film produced by Cathay-Keris filmed from the Chinese point of view at a time when Malaysian films dominated the industry, it presents local talent and themes, as well as Singapore town and countryside expansion. It certainly opened the way for the creation of more diversified cinema. This film which tried to put across a faithful image of a town in the wind of change was very successful in Singapore which proves that it managed to touch the right chord in the local public at the time. “The Lion City” was digitally restored by the Asian Film Archive in 2015 from a 35 mm copy lent by the Hong Kong Cinematheque.
