Dadong, a retired policeman, is really hostile when his only daughter Mila tells him she is pregnant and wants to marry Noel. After the couple insists on getting married, the father begrudgingly gives his permission provided his future son-in-law pays a ridiculously hefty dowry. Dadong then carries on with all kinds of demands, adamant to maintain his patriarchal domination in spite of everything. Freely inspired from "The House on Zapote Street" by Nick Joaquin, “In the Wink of an Eye” keeps a realistic dimension from beginning to end. Mike de Leon here explores the violence of patriarchy through the portrait of the father who keeps his family subjected to him and terrorized in his iron fist.
When it was released, “In the Wink of an Eye” was viewed as an allegory of the dictatorial regime of then President Ferdinand Marcos.
