In a village from Bihar where untouchables live, an activist school teacher is murdered by the landowner’s brother. After Naugaria kills the murderer the village is put on fire and the villagers are massacred. Naugaria and his pregnant wife Rama run away. They go to Calcutta, look for work and finally accept to make a flock of pigs cross the river Ganga. It is a very perilous crossing, especially for Rama during her pregnancy.
Paar, an auteur film with powerful realism, is a metaphor on our world. Directed by one among greatest Bengali directors, the film has two icons in the lead roles, Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah, but also great actors: Mohan Agashe, Anil Chatterjee, Om Puri and Utpal Dutt.
