Tang Jia Ling is a village in the suburbs of Beijing. Attracted by affordable rents, thousands of workers take up residence there. They are named “The Tribe of the Ants”.
Through their experience of life, love and doubts about their future, Yang Huilong reveals the hidden side of the Chinese growth.
“We chose to shoot the film in the form of a documentary to better show the experiences and emotions of these ‘ants’: their daily life, ordeals, ambition and disappointment have a kind of beauty in their desire of success. As hundreds of thousands young graduate migrants in search for a dream life in Beijing, the capital for all desires, I too lived in a ghetto. We dedicate The Tribe of the Ants to all our friends and all the ants of the colony: may them all keep hope and live their dreams.” Yang Huilong
A village facing Chinese excessiveness is confronted with rural urbanization.
