Chen Kaige was born in 1952 in Beijing. He had to interrupt his secondary studies because of the Cultural Revolution. In 1978, he was admitted to the Beijing Film Academy. In 1988, he lived in New York where he lectured at the university. He returned to China in 1990. He directed nearly 30 films and is considered one of the leaders of the “fifth generation” of Chinese cinema.
