« Although he started a career as a promising writer, Ryota accumulates disillusions. After he divorced Kyoko, he wastes the little money he earns as a private detective by betting at the races, up to the point he can no more pay the alimony for his eleven-year-old son Shingo. Now Ryota tries to regain his relatives’ trust and play a part in his son’s life. Things don’t look too good until the day a typhoon forces the whole family to overnight together.
“Ryota as well as the other characters we discover in the film are overwhelmed with hopeless reality and are unable to give up their dreams; hence happiness remains unattainable... This story intimately scrutinizes the present life of people and how they behave. All the characters have great difficulties in becoming the adults they dreamt of being when they were children. However, they keep trying to find a way to appreciate life, even though it is different from the future they dreamt of.” Kore-eda Hirokazu
