Nozomi is an outgoing young woman who is very popular with her school friends, as well as being a very talented flute player. Mizore, more withdrawn and shyer, plays the oboe. She feels very close to Nozomi upon whom she depends, and whom she is fond of and admires. She fears that the end of their last year at high school will also put an end to their relationship, halfway between musical rivalry and admiration. The two friends are rehearsing a duet together to take part in Kita Uji high school’s music competition. When their orchestra begins to practise the music of Liz and the Blue Bird, they believe they can see the reflection of their own story as adolescents in this bucolic musical piece. Will the reality of life evolve towards the fairy tale?
“Nozomi is cheerful, happy and full of life. She’s a girl who plays the flute to express her love of music. It’s a mixture of all those things which attract Mizore, a solitary being, who manages to reach beyond her own world, thanks to her friend. Nozomi’s world becomes everything for Mizore, and that creates an imbalance between the two characters. It’s this imbalance which the film is about.” Yamada Naoko
