Sri Lanka, in the 1950s. Violet, a middle-aged woman, has raised two daughters alone in the walled city of Galle Fort. One is married and one engaged, and she seeks to get them settled. The reappearance of her lost first love Victor, makes her wonder if she might also be happy; but when she begins to live according to her heart's desires, it seems as if everything in her society is against her. She becomes more and more oppressed by established social forces and religious and psychological pressures make her life impossible.
“When I directed this movie, I wondered if I could imagine my mother as a human being in her own right” states Vithanage concerning this incredible movie, which depicts society’s and Christian religion’s restrictions on a woman’s desires and freewill.
