With the construction of the Three Gorges dam, all farmers must leave their village located at an altitude of 800 meters and go to a city lat an altitude of 500 meters. Without hesitating, Hong Fen settles in a spacious flat with running water, despite the objection from her father-in-law Old Sun. Her eight-year-old daughter can go to a primary school, as she was dreaming of it.
Hong Fen discovers she is expecting a second child, which makes her very happy. However, the civil servants of the family planning service come to tell her she cannot keep this child. Law only allows a second child in families living above 800 meters. Hong Fen tries to explain to them her child was conceived when she lived in the mountains, but they refuse to listen and want to force her to abort. The local farmers now refuse to leave their mountains. For 35 years, China has been imposing the policy of the only child, sometimes violently. Since 2015, the law has been made more flexible.
