Poor peasant woman Magdana is a widow, alone to provide for her three children Safo, Mikho and Kato. One day, Mikho and Kato find a donkey about to die on the roadside. They take the donkey home and look after it. The donkey recovers and soon can carry milk to the city. One day on her way Madgana meets Mitua who recognizes the donkey he had abandoned. He wants it back but she refuses and the matter is brought to court. The coalman wins the case. Magdana goes back home, stricken by grief and injustice.
Magdana’s Donkey marks the revival of Georgian cinema. Tenguiz Abdulaz is interested in the daily life led by simple people and distances himself from the trend in Russian cinema.
