On the river Inguri, which forms a physical border between Georgia and Abkhazia, bands of fertile land appear and disappear with the seasons.
An old Abkhaz inhabitant and his granddaughter grow maize on one of these transient islands. The close link they have with nature is dis turbed by patrolling border guards.
“In August 1992, the war was starting...Two hundred and fifty thou- sand Georgians living in Abkhazia had to leave their lands and their homes. Many others were made to stay there indefinitely, because of our powerful neighbour...
