It’s the monsoon season in Singapore. In a secondary school there, Ling teaches mandarin, a subject not very highly considered. She and her husband have been trying for years to have children, and their failure to do so has been having an adverse effect on the couple. At a time when her professional and personal life are both falling apart, her relationship with a young student calls everything into question.
“Somehow, the idea sunk into my head and I have since been obsessed by this woman losing herself under the pressures of straddling the expectations of a modern working-woman and dutiful wife. This oddly mirrors my own experience of trying to start a family with my wife. The desperation and pain, resilience and determination of Ling is something I greatly empathize with. I always felt that our emotions tend to lead us to places we never thought possible. This ambiguity in human connections and bonding has always and will continue to intrigue me.” Antony Chen
