In the heart of Tokyo, the Kobayashi family live quietly in the printing factory where they live and work. When an old family friend reappears, no one realises how he is gradually encroaching on their lives... to the point of taking their place.
“The initial title of the scenario was “Rotary”. It was as much a reference to rotative printing systems as to the impermanence of life which twists and turns and is finally wound up. It soon became obvious to me that the notions of “community” and “exclusion” were the main themes of this film, with the underlying question of how to let an outsider in. Consequently the title became “Hospitality” ... It seemed to me to be all the more relevant since I am very aware of the immigration problems in Japan recently... I hope that more and more migrants will come and mingle with our population to put an end to this logic of a “pure” ethnic group. It is always more stimulating and more fun to mix cultures and points of view.” Kôji Fukada
