In search of his roots, Sachiko goes to visit his Japanese family settled on the island of Sumatra. Everyone there is trying to rebuild their lives after the tsunami which destroyed the island ten years before. A young man has just been washed up by the waves. He does not speak but, strangely, understands Japanese. The whole village is fascinated by this stranger from the sea, who soon shows he possesses powers as mysterious as Nature herself.
“ The fact that Japan and Indonesia are linked by the sea was quite obvious to me. That idea filled out the character of this foreigner, who in fact symbolises Nature, intervening with no concern for humankind, just as easily saving us as destroying us. I do realise that this film can be seen as a reflection of what happened at Fukushima, but I wanted to invite the spectators to go beyond this example and ask themselves what a natural catastrophe really is and even more so, how Nature works.” Kôji Fukada
