Ichiko is a live-in nurse. She works for a family who have always considered her as one of the family. But when the youngest daughter disappears, Ichiko finds herself accused of being an accomplice in the kidnapping. As we trace back the chain of events, confusion grows : is she guilty ? Who is she really?
"What I wanted to render in the film is the complexity of the Ichiko character, both accomplice and victim, in the crime and in its punishment. It may seem futile but her scratches on the screen are marks made in the hearts of the spectators, and her cry should make them tremble. Ichiko learns to her cost that social position, self-respect and human relationships are like the different floors of a building constructed on sandy ground. And this ground is not just beneath Ichiko but beneath all of us ... In this film and through the character of Ichiko, I wanted to talk about the strength and determination of people who carry on with their lives despite the absurdity of existence.” Kôji Fukada
