At the end of the civil war, Russians are hungry. After his father’s death, Micha, a ten-year-old boy, is the family’s only breadwinner. As he can’t find anything for them to eat, he tells his mother that he has decided to go away to Tashkent, a reputedly wealthy city. Along with a seven-year-old friend, he undergoes ordeals, has good and bad encounters and once he gets to Tashkent, he has to work hard in order to earn enough money to take back to his family. When he arrives back home, bad news awaits him. The screenplay is by the great film director A. Mikhalkov-Kontchalovsky, adapted from a story by Aleksandr Neverov.
Young Micha embodies a nation capable of facing the sometimes sudden changes in history while remaining true to its soul.
