The Bartolomes struggle to keep their families safe during the dark period in the history of the Philippines, that of martial law. Amanda is a mother of 5 children who also tries to find her identity and her goal as a wife, a mother and a woman. Julian, Amanda's conventional and domineering husband, insists that she keep her place as a woman in their family of boys. Jules, Amanda’s elder son, constantly hides as he has actively taken part in the struggle against the government. Eman is the quiet son who secretly writes against the current administration. Mischievous Gani joins the American army and Jason, the adventurous son, is arrested by a corrupt police force.
In an era marked by passion, fear, unrest and social chaos, the children struggle to accept their ideological differences and the father faces the painful dissent of his children but it is the mother’s love that proves most effective in the unfolding of this family story. She will awaken to the needs of her own self, as she embarks on a journey of discovery to realize who she is as a wife, a mother, a woman and a Filipina.
