Shimu, 23 years old, works in a textile factory in Dacca, Bangladesh. Faced with working conditions which are growing harder and harder, she decides to form a trade union with her colleagues, despite the threats of the management and her husband’s disagreement. Together, they will fight it out to the bitter end. “What struck me is that with a minimum wage, difficult working conditions and a permanent struggle against patriarchal authority, these women have become independent. A hundred years earlier, in Bangladesh, they would not have been able to get a job, they would have spent their lives in complete isolation. Today, they go out to work, they earn a living, sometimes to sustain a family, and inside the factory, they fight for their rights... it’s their force of character I want to bring into the light. They are not victims, they are the wind of change... The economic backbone of the country is guaranteed by women. What’s more, these women work together, they have a great sense of comradeship. We have got where we are because we have benefited from the support of those women who have gone before us.” Rubaiyat Hossein
