Born in New York, Rachel Chu has never been to Asia. When she accompanies her fiancé Nick Young to the wedding of his best friend in Singapore, Rachel is therefore delighted to discover the continent of her ancestors... even if she is a little apprehensive about meeting her fiancé’s family. It must be said that Nick has omitted several impor- tant details. For he is not only the heir to one of the richest families in the country, but he is also one of its most sought-after single men. Rachel then becomes the target of all the young women in high Singapore society looking for a husband, but, what is even worse, of her future mother-in-law. If love is not to be bought, money sometimes makes situations extremely complex... “Since I grew up in an immi- grant family, in my heart of hearts I’m still a little Chinese. But, to be honest, I’m a real Californian! When I was at high school, I played basketball and tennis, and I took part in all these typically American activities, and this rift linked to my cultural identity has always been pregnant with meaning in my life. You have to choose what you want to retain among your cultural traditions and your philosophy of life, and, on the other hand, what you want to relinquish.” Jon M. Chu
