Located in the north-east of Kyrgyzstan, in the middle of high mountains, the Issyk Kul Lake is one of the deepest lakes in the world. Some metal wrecks can be found aground, like sea monsters from another time. An Admiral of the Soviet navy, a relentless figure that is both joyful and melancholy, lives in the closed down harbor of Balyktchy. Boris Vassilievitch Tchoumakov is still watching over his fleet aground when the inactivity of the harbor is broken by the arrival of a new manager who wants to turn the area into a sea-resort. “Through this personal portrait, the film raises the question of the mark left by the USSR on its former unsung republics, Kyrgyzstan, 30 years after its independence. The marine imaginary is nowhere to be found and the peace and quiet of the great lakes is not disturbed by any ship. The Admiral of the lake hasn’t moved on. Every day he walks around the post-industrial settings of Balyktchy, wearing his Soviet navy uniform. Through this character who doesn’t belong in this new world, I would also like to speak about the feeling of uprooting, about loneliness, old age and the relation to memory.” Laurier Fourniau
