“When I stayed in Singapore for the first time in 2001, the Capitol immediately drew my attention. My first steps in the city led me to the faded frontage of an old decaying building. An old guard was suppo- sed to keep people from trespassing. But after I expressed my passion for the Seventh Art, I was allowed to enter the room, or in what had once been the room. I thus entered a beautiful movie theater, unfortunately in a state of dereliction... Since then, the Capitol has been restored. Mythical... the Capitol is indeed, as it is the perfect cinema gem of Singapore: first, it epitomizes an era that is long gone (the era of the beginning of cinema in Singapore and the era of the golden age of movies and the local production of the 1950’s-70’s). But it also epitomizes a new era since it has been renovated and become again a landmark movie theatre on the island. It is proof that, in a city like Singapore where it is common to make a clean break with the past, and especially with the architectural heritage, the history of cinema has been able to resist and, in the end, to mark memories.” Raphaël Millet
