Hieratic and without dialogues-Georgian or Armenian words as well as songs in the film are part of the musical score-, Sayat Nova relates the life of the greatest Armenian poet of 18th century, through eight tableaus composed with meticulous dedication. They are ordered with objects from daily life, religious items or works of art, cloths, carpets, ancient stones which hold Paradjanov’s contemplative attention, just as radiantly beautiful faces are captured by him with loving respect.
“Dear audience, don’t expect to find the life of Sayat Nova, the great Armenian poet of the 18th century, in this film. We only tried to use cinematic devises to create a picture of this poetical world, about which Russian bard Valeri Brioussov said: ‘Armenian medieval poetry is one of the brilliant victories of the human mind that will go down in the history of our world.’ “Serguei Paradjanov
