A few years before Second World War, young Japanese peasant girl Chiyo and her sister are sold by their parents who cannot meet ends. She is hired as maidservant in a Geisha brothel in Kyoto. She spends a miserable childhood, suffering from the mean and harsh landlady, and from the demanding Hatsumomo, the favourite geisha. One day, she briefly meets a man who gives her strength to resist and fight. As she grows up, she meekly submits to the hard training to become a geisha. She avoids all traps set by her rival, the deceitful Hatsumomo. After years of work and the experience of a complicit geisha, she becomes the renowned geisha Sayuri. With her great beauty and skills in arts, Sayuri fascinates the most powerful men. Forbidden to fall in love, she is haunted by the secret love she feels for the only man she cannot cherish…
Shot in the United States with English speaking Chinese actresses, Memoirs of a Geisha is aesthetically remarkable.
