In 1944, young Suzu leaves her village near Hiroshima to get married and live with her in-laws in Kure, a naval base. With her creative mind to overcome the hardships, she soon becomes indispensable at home. Suzu seems to hold an ancestral wisdom, each of her simple daily movement is filled with poetry and beauty. The difficulty to get provision of supplies during a war, the loss of relatives and the frequent air attacks do not alter her love of life. However, in 1945 with the devastating bombing on the city of Kure, followed by the tragedy of Hiroshima, Suzu’s perseverance and courage are put to the test.
“I know it is sometimes difficult to talk of the war, but I think that as many people as possible should deal with this subject. There are various viewpoints depending on people and this allows a large variety of stories. I hope the film will bring a slightly different point of view. The difference between a manga and a film is that one can read a manga alone, whereas in a theatre we look at a film alongside an audience. This too is another theme worth discussing.” Fumiyo Kouno, author of the manga.
