The Lady is an outstanding love story between a man, Michael Aris, and an exceptional woman, Aung San Suu Kyi, who sacrificed her happiness and private life to make her own people happy. Yet, nothing will ever weaken such infinite love between them, not even separation, absence, isolation or the inhumanity of a political junta, still ruling Burma.
The Lady is also the story of a woman who became one of today symbols in the struggle for democracy. It is the unfailing determination and extraordinary courage of a single woman confronted with a whole brutal tyrannical regime that drove Michelle Yeoh and Luc Besson to make a film about this unique destiny.
“Nevertheless, the choice Aung San Suu Kyi made in sacrificing her private life in the name of her ideals was not necessarily easy to understand and accept… I wondered how a mother could make such a choice, and this was such a long way from me that I was determined to understand what drove her to give up everything for her country.” Virginie Besson-Silla
The junta has been back in power since 1st February 2021 and court actions against Aung San Suu Kyi follow on one after the other.
