Jean-Robert Thomann was born in 1969, in Casablanca. A graduate of the University of Valenciennes, where he obtained a master's degree in audiovisual communication, he worked as an editor on various television programs before turning to directing. He has lived in Taiwan since 2020 and makes documentaries and short films there, mostly on themes related to Taiwan.
