The festivities are in full swing in a small Bedouin village in Israel, at the Jordan border. Suleiman who already married Jalila is getting married to his second wife. While Jalila tries to swallow humiliation, she discovers that their elder daughter Layla has a relationship with a young man from the university where she studies. This forbidden love could hold the whole family to public opprobrium and she will fight it. However, Layla is ready to shatter the ancestral traditions governing the village and to put everybody’s convictions to the test.
“The women in my village live in a tight world governed by very strict rules. They fight, each of them in her own way, and try to find out to what extent they can push back the bounds without imploding the system. They yearn for another life, for themselves and their kind. They try to succeed by changing things from within.” Elite Zexer
It is a long journey for women to acquire the right to speak within a rigid unbending patriarchal society.
