Sehnaz is a brilliant psychiatrist working in a hospital on the Mediterranean cost in Turkey. She shares her life with her companion Cem, a famous charismatic architect. They live an independent modern life. Yet, Sehnaz wonders about the sincerity of their relationship. Elmas lives with her much older husband in a conservative home. While her step-mother vigilantly watches on her, she is charge of the all domestic chores, playing the role of wet-nurse and constrained to submit to her husband's sexual desire at night.
While Ustaoglu intertwines the stories of Sehnaz and Elmas, we gradually understand their lives have more similar points than it may seem at first sight. In this film, the most political one she made, Yesim Ustaoglu revisits the theme of alienation she tackled in her previous films, under an obviously feminine angle. In Clair Obscur about the life of two women coming from two worlds apart, she explores the various possibilities and limits met by women in Turkey today.
