In Beirut today, an insult which gets out of proportion, brings Toni (a Lebanese Christian) and Yasser (a Palestinian refugee) before the courts. From intimate hurt to revelation, the confrontation between lawyers puts Lebanon on the brink of social explosion but makes these two men look each other in the eye.
“The war in Lebanon ended in 1990 with no winners and no losers : “not guilty” for all. General amnesty was transformed into general amnesia. The dust was swept under the carpet, as we say. But without this effort of remembrance, we will never be healed... If I had to summarise this film, I would say it was about the search for dignity. Each of the two characters has lost their honour and their dignity, each blames the other, making the latter responsible for his problems. The Insult is a film of universal dimension. Yasser and Toni could have other nationalities, or be from another country. It is firmly optimistic and humanistic. It shows the way to an alternative to conflict by means of a form of recognition, and by justice and forgiveness.”
