It’s Imrah’s first day as chambermaid at the Singapura Hotel. In suite number 27 a group of pop musicians has come to see the new year in. Among the group, the singer Damien is in a sort of trance when he passes Imrah in the corridor. A lot later, in this same hotel, a Japanese woman lets her lover slip away, a travesty gets satisfaction one last time before the operation, a woman tourist goes to bed in front of her best male friend... But Imrah, while tidying the room, will always remember her meeting with Damien.
“As the eight settings follow on from one another, we share the private lives of the occupants, from the heyday of the hotel in the 1940s to its dilapidation in the not so far off future. The film starts as the Japanese army is about to invade Singapore. Going back in time, we feel all the violence of the 1950s, then the euphoria of the 60s, while at the same time observing the evolution of social relationships and change in behaviour regarding sex. In the 90s, the Singapura Hotel was turned into a motel, a landmark for those souls ending up on the roadside.” Eric Khoo
