Young boy Zawana enters the monastery of a small village run by U Dharma. He feels very attracted to a village young girl and doubts about his religious commitment; however he gradually becomes very fond of the old monk yet very demanding. The monastery meets big financial problems, a young monk drawn by Yangoon’s mirages leaves the monastery and the old monk falls seriously sick. Someone must take care of him and of the whole community. Zawana realizes he must take up the challenge. In this film coproduced with Czech FAMU, old demanding monk U Dharma embodies a traditional form of Buddhism while Zawana represents a lively Buddhism rooted in reality. The film shows magnificent images of a country where dictatorship gave little chance to auteur cinema until now.
