In order to escape from his troubled past, Renwei, after 20 years of absence, returns with his fiancée to his native village, where his uncle is the mayor. Situated in the mountains, on the border between China and Burma, the village of Zhiziluo has changed enormously and has lost many of its inhabitants, who have gone off to try their luck in town. As he is short of help, Renwei’s uncle suggests that he work in family planning.
“Whenever I go to Zhiziluo, I see the ideological relics of the cultural revolution cropping up on the faded walls and in the dusty rooms of every single house...I can feel these ghosts watching me, as they carry on haunting us all. And I say to myself that we keep on in fact living in the shadow of this heritage. These spirits are our own, even though we look away. Our society has lost its humanity. We have become indifferent to so many things which nevertheless take place right in front of us, including those which are the most atrocious. We are living in a new era and we couldn’t care less about signs from the past and the present... It’s the recipe for disaster.” Zhao Dayong
