At the beginning of the 1980s, Liyun and Yaojun form a happy couple. While the regime has just adopted the policy of the one-child family, a tragic event is going to upset their lives.
For 40 years, while they are attempting to find meaning in their lives again, their destiny is going to intertwine with that of contemporary China.
“At the time that this policy was brought in, a large number of the Chinese population were comprehensive about it, especially because of the risk of overpopulation and for economic reasons. Having said that, whatever policies a state adopts, it must not ignore the freedom, rights and well-being of individuals. Everyone should have the right to make their own life decisions and choose how many children they will have. What happened with this policy is that each person in China had to organise their lives in function of the needs of the country, of society and government decisions, with no other option available on a perso- nal level. It seems to me that that is an absolutely unique situation.” Wang Xiaoshuai
