In 1970, during the Cultural Revolution, a lot of young city-dwellers are sent into the country to be “re-educated”. Xi Nan, Qi Yue, Nin Yu, Qu Lin and Xiao Didi, five school-friends from Pekin, live together on the isolated farm of Bei da Huang. Soon, hard reality is going to put them to the test. Qi Yue,who believes in this new way of life, does not understand her parents who are against the Revolution. Xiao Didi, back from abroad, and with no news of his parents, loses the will to live. Nin Yu, finding the difficult living conditions unbearable on this rough farm, is ready to get married to someone she does not know so as to return to town. The Revolution lasts for a long time. Everyone is looking for a way out. Xiao Didi, injured while working, now limps. Xi Nan has returned to school to study but with no means of support. Qi Yue, the only one who believes in this new, rural lifestyle, dies in a fire. The title of the film Our Farmland is that of a song which they all loved as children.
The Cultural Revolution has made a disaster of their youth.
