Today, in the wooden house of a coffee farm in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, Vân is bedridden and has only a few months left to live. Wandering between reality, memories and dreams, she tries to record a farewell message to her daughters, 6-year-old Nguyêt and 3-year-old Nge. She also deeply wants to donate her organs after she dies. Her 30-year-old husband Hoàng has to break the news of her decision to her father, a conservative farmer who helps them take care of the two little girls. Vân’s mother also accidently died at the age of 27 on a coffee plantation. Hoàng also has to pay off his debt to his sponsor Kiên. His only solution is to give a kidney supposedly to Kiên’s father. Against all odds, Vân and Hoàng gradually find love again and the strength to face difficulties. “Memento Mori: Earth”, the first part of a trilogy, is inspired by the stories of people who wanted to give meaning to their lives just before passing away, of those who didn’t want to give up and still clung to life. The director was also inspired by his own family story.
