February, after the death of his Vietnamese grand-mother, a young French musical reporter decides to discover Vietnam through classic music: the national orchestra of Vietnam, a choir of blind singers inspired by French tunes, a workshop manufacturing wind instruments in a catholic province... François’s series of enquiries finally leads to his determining meeting with Thuy, a traditional musician who makes him want to know more about Vietnamese culture. His adventure is gradually transformed into a quest for identity, taking him away from western culture and bringing him closer to Vietnamese culture: music has become a little bridge that connects François to his grand-mother.“Halfway between a documentary and a travel diary, “Once Upon a Bridge in Vietnam” inspires us to think about identity: that of a country, Vietnam, too often associated to war or gastronomy and rarely explored for its music scene; also, the mixed identity of a young Frenchman who wants to find his Vietnamese grandmother. It is therefore aimed at all the Vietnamese diaspora, at all the classic music and travel enthusiasts, and at all the people who have been slow to understand the culture of their forefathers.” Francois Bibonne
