Andreas Ungerböck was born in 1960. After studying theatre, cinema and journalism at the University of Vienna, he has been a film journalist since 1987. He directed a television documentary on Hong Kong cinema (1997) for the channel ARTE. From 1994 to 2002, he was the editor of the catalog of the Viennale film festival. He is the editor of several books. From 2005 to 2022 he is the co-editor of the Austrian film magazine Ray. He curated several retrospectives on Asian cinema, such as Hong Kong in Motion (1990, 1991, 1995), Taipei Stories (1996), Korean Cinema (1998), Cinema Asia (2003), China Now (2004), Asia 3D (2013). He is the co-founder of the Red Lotus Asian Film Festival Vienna, the first edition of which took place in May 2022.
