A charming, educated dancer, raised in Bahrain, moves into the home of her new husband who comes from a traditional, patriarchal family. While the domestic routine of the wife starts in the sweet bliss of a new marriage, things begin to go sour. The chore of cooking and all its drudgery – cleaning up, dirty utensils and leaking taps – is left to women while the men indulge in their phones or yoga.
"The Great Indian Kitchen is a penetrating portrait of the life that too many women in this country lead. Jeo Baby provides a scathing critique of the situation that so many women experience. No high drama or thick plot. Nothing major happens. The reason this film hits so hard is that it finds horror in the ordinary – the way women toil tirelessly, almost like prisoners trapped in front of the sink and stove, how men take their labour for granted, offering no help or gratitude, the drudgery of their daily lives and the slow stifling of their individuality and their dreams." Anupama Chopra – Film Companion
