Hamaguchi Ryûsuke was born in 1978 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. He obtained a master's degree in cinema from the Graduate School of Film and New Media at Tokyo University of the Arts. Passion, his graduation film, was selected in 2008 at the San Sebastian Festival. He has made several fiction films and co-directed a documentary series. Drive My Car wins the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes in 2021.
