Dounia is 6 years old. She leaves Aleppo with a few nigella seeds tucked in the palm of her hand, and with the help of the princess of Aleppo, Dounia travels to a new world...
"When thinking about how to tell the story of migrants to children, I first drew a group of migrants with their bags on the road, gradually giving them a first name, a surname, a character, an ethnic and religious background, a history.
There was this very strong idea for me that in this sort of situation, all that remains is for us to pick up the pieces of our lives and to try and see what we can do with them. In the middle and at the front of the group, there was the picture of a very young girl, with open arms, welcoming the unknown, with incredible hair, a zest for life and boundless joy. It was Dounia. Dounia, because this name, given to little girls in the Arab world, means "the world" or more specifically, life on earth. This name contains everything that Dounia has within her. She loses everything but the world belongs to her." Marya Zarif
