Based on the S.E.A. Write Award-winning book by Kampoon Boonthavee, “Son of the Northeast” is a historical drama film set in 1930s Isan in northeastern Thailand. Filmed in a documentary style, the story follows a tight-knit group of Isan subsistence farmers as they struggle against drought and other depredations.
This movie is considered to be one of the greatest classics of Thai Cinema History by one of the very best directors. Vichit Kounavudhi was famous for his realistic portrayals of difficult social issues. His second feature, the docudrama The people of the Mountain, put the spotlight on the harsh living conditions of the hill tribes of the Northeast of the country. Son of the Northeast might be a more fictionalized version of his previous movie, but also very close to Thailand’s situation in the 1980s.
