In Indochina, in the thirties, Eliane Devries and her father Emile run a rubber plantation. She has adopted an orphan, Camille, an Annamese princess. Both of them soon fall in love with Jean-Baptiste, a young naval officer. At the same time, against the background of prevailing nationalism, the first attempts on French people’s lives are made.
“There are few places in the world having such a hold over people like Vietnam. We were all haunted when we came back from there, full of respect and friendship.” Erik Orsenna
