Duyen marries a young taxi driver. Dead drunk on his wedding day, he does not touch his bride. He does not even touch her during the following weeks. Duyen is friendly with Cam. She never suspected the deep feelings the young woman feels for her. When Cam understands Duyen’s wedding has not been consummated, she throws her into Thô’s arms, a libertine young man who initiates her into the art of love. With him, Duyen for the first time discovers her feminity which had been restrained by the traditional morality…
“The particularity of ‘Vertigo’ is to tell a story seen from within the characters. It is indeed a contemporary portrayal of Vietnamese society, even if the issues faced by the characters could finally have happened at any moment in the history of Vietnam. These are universal problems not belonging to a specific time of History: loneliness and desire, which besides are very Vietnamese problems.” Bui Thac Chuyên
