In the course of three separate migrations, a first one in the 1860ies, a second one between 1920 and 1970 and a third one from 1980 onwards, a Chinese community got established in Guyana and Martinique.
“As many communities of immigrants settled mostly about a century ago in France, the Chinese community in Martinique and Guyana did not attract much attention. Why have they been ignored for so long? Is it due to indifference? An intentional stigmatization? Difficulties for field investigation? Or by lack of spokespersons? Do such communities in Martinique and Guyana look like Diasporas in Paris, Montreal, New York or in Reunion? A return to Chinese roots can be noticed, but what China are we talking about? Is there a tendency to identity withdrawal? How do Chinese people consider the other communities? What bonds have they tied with them?” Jil Servant.
