After discovering his love Vera is pregnant and no one knows who the father is, Emo sets out on a journey. Leaving Vera and the city he goes back to his native place, the land of the ‘kurais,’ those thorny bushes swept away by the wind. Once back on the land he comes from he hopes to find out where to go. His mother used to tell him legends of the ‘kurais’. In this land of snow, cotton and salt, he meets very different people: Surfyani is searching for his drowned son he still believes to be alive, Botagos is the driver of a tanker he can hardly fill up because the lake in which he used to fish is now drying up. At the end of his journey he understands the significance of the ‘kurais’ mystery. He has learnt one must take life as it comes and one must know where to go in order to live and love well
