After her father, an oceanographer, was lost at sea, eleven-year-old girl Momo leaves Tokyo with her mother Ikuko to settle on the Shio island in the Seto inner sea. They will both stay at Ikuko’s uncle and aunt, who are happy to see young blood reaching their aging island. The family house has not changed much in years. Ikuko is delighted to
be back there. She finds the place simply wonderful, whereas Momo fears it might become a boring place, especially because she does not know anyone. Even though Yota is a nice boy and is very fond of her, Momo is however unable to join the likable group of youngsters living on the island. One day, she sees a shadow next to her mother. Later in the attic of the house, she discovers that the images of an illustrated book have disappeared and she ears suspicious noises. She feels scared…
“I am convinced that we all wish to remain connected with the people we love who are no more with us. I wanted to make a film revolving around this universal feeling.” Okiura Hiroyuki
